Water Damage Dehumidifier Calculator: Target AHAM & Fleet Capacity
Use this planner when a project already has a target AHAM moisture-removal capacity. Enter that target, select a current exact dehumidifier or enter a custom unit capacity, and the tool estimates whole-unit quantity plus combined AHAM, saturation capacity, process air and planning amps. It deliberately does not invent a square-foot-to-dehumidifier formula.
The target AHAM capacity must come from the project plan, professional procedure or another defensible method. Restoration Select does not turn floor area into an authoritative drying-equipment requirement without a verified public basis.
Target and dehumidifier inputs
Why the tool starts with a target AHAM capacity
The blueprint intentionally rejected a universal “one dehumidifier per X square feet” approach. Water-damage restoration is affected by the amount and type of wet material, environmental conditions, demolition/removal, air movement, containment and the professional drying method. Floor area alone cannot describe that moisture load.
Rather than manufacture a precise-looking constant, the calculator begins where the product data is strongest: a capacity target and exact manufacturer-published AHAM PPD.
The unit-count calculation
Once a model is selected, the calculation is straightforward:
Required whole units = target AHAM PPD ÷ per-unit AHAM PPD, rounded up.
If the project target is 300 PPD AHAM and the selected model publishes 85 PPD AHAM, 300 ÷ 85 = 3.53, so the whole-unit estimate is four machines. Their combined nominal AHAM capacity is 340 PPD.
Why the tool does not use saturation PPD for the unit estimate
Saturation capacity is measured under a hotter, wetter condition and can be much larger than AHAM. Using it in place of AHAM would make the fleet appear smaller without keeping the test condition consistent. The planner therefore uses verified AHAM only and shows combined saturation capacity separately when the model publishes it.
Test the number of units you plan to use
After you select a catalog model or custom capacity, you can optionally enter the number of units you plan to use. The planner multiplies that quantity by the exact per-unit AHAM capacity, then shows whether your planned fleet is above or below the target. This is useful for comparing “three larger machines” against “four smaller machines” without pretending the target itself came from the calculator.
Combined process air is context, not additional capacity
If the exact product publishes process airflow, the planner sums it across the required or planned quantity. This can help with overall equipment logistics, but process CFM is not added to AHAM and it does not become a second drying-capacity score.
Planning amps are a fleet total, not a circuit authorization
The tool also sums the exact published rated amps when available. Four units at 5.9A each produce a planning total of 23.6A across the fleet. That does not mean they belong on one circuit. Available circuits, other equipment, manufacturer requirements and jobsite electrical conditions still need separate planning.
Compare fleet scenarios without changing the target
The target AHAM value remains fixed while you switch models. That makes it possible to compare the operational consequence of different machine sizes without moving the goalposts. A 300 PPD target requires four 85-PPD units, three 100-PPD units or three 125-PPD units by the nominal arithmetic. The larger-unit option creates more AHAM headroom, but it may also change weight, process airflow and electrical demand.
This is more useful than a universal “best size” because the same target can be met by several fleet configurations. The right configuration can depend on access, number of rooms, available circuits, transport and whether distributing multiple smaller machines is desirable.
Headroom is an arithmetic result, not a safety factor
Rounding to whole units usually pushes combined AHAM above the entered target. That extra capacity is simply the difference between discrete equipment sizes and the numeric target. Restoration Select does not label the excess as a required safety factor or claim that more headroom automatically shortens drying time.
If a professional method calls for a margin above the underlying requirement, that margin should already be reflected in the target AHAM value entered into the planner.
Which models are eligible for the calculator dropdown
A current model must have a verified numeric AHAM value. The current BlueDri BD-130 is therefore not offered in the automatic model list because its manufacturer source contains conflicting AHAM values. The product can remain visible in Compare, but a conflicted capacity should not drive arithmetic.
Custom capacity is useful for equipment outside the catalog
Select “Use custom dehumidifier capacity” when the exact machine is not in Restoration Select. Enter the AHAM capacity from the manufacturer documentation. Saturation, process air and amps are optional; if you leave them blank, their combined outputs remain N/A rather than zero.
What the result does not prove
A capacity target and whole-unit count do not inspect wet materials, classify the water loss, determine drying time or verify completion. The planner only translates a supplied target into exact equipment capacity. Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator determine the AHAM capacity a water-damage job needs?
No. The target AHAM PPD must come from your project plan, professional method or qualified judgment. Restoration Select intentionally does not derive a target from square footage because the current blueprint does not have an authoritative universal formula to support that.
How does it calculate the number of dehumidifiers?
It divides the target AHAM capacity by the selected model's verified AHAM capacity and rounds up to the next whole machine.
Why is saturation capacity shown if AHAM determines the unit estimate?
Saturation is displayed as separate context when the exact model publishes it. It is not substituted for AHAM in the unit-count calculation.
What happens if a model has no verified AHAM capacity?
It is not offered as a catalog option for the unit estimate. A missing or conflicted AHAM value cannot become zero or an invented capacity.
What does “Number of units you plan to use” do?
After a dehumidifier model or custom capacity is selected, this optional field lets you test a quantity you are considering. The calculator shows the combined AHAM and whether that quantity is above or below the target you entered.
Does the planning amp total tell me how many units can go on one circuit?
No. It is only the sum of the published per-unit planning amp values. Circuit rating, other connected loads, manufacturer instructions and jobsite electrical conditions must be checked separately.
