A HEPA negative air machine needs two independently verified things: a HEPA filtration configuration and manufacturer-published negative-air or ducted-containment capability. Why the combined requirement deserves its own shortlist
HEPA and negative air answer different questions. HEPA describes fine particulate filtration. Negative-air capability describes whether the machine is documented for exhausting filtered air from a contained area or otherwise supporting a pressure-control setup. A product can clearly document one and leave the other unstated.
For buyers who know both are required, treating the fields separately creates unnecessary noise. This page narrows the current normalized catalog to products where both pieces of evidence are present. The shortlist is narrower than “all HEPA air scrubbers”
XPOWER X-3580 is a useful four-stage HEPA/carbon air scrubber, but the current normalized exact record does not carry a verified negative-air-capable field. That does not prove the machine cannot be used that way; it means the current exact evidence set used by Restoration Select does not support turning the capability into a deterministic “Yes.”
The same rule applies across brands. A familiar housing, compatible-looking duct flange or retailer title is not enough to manufacture a capability field. This page is deliberately evidence-gated rather than trying to maximize the number of products in the table.
HEPA efficiency wording should remain exact
EPA describes the common HEPA reference as at least 99.97% capture at 0.3 microns. Individual product manufacturers may publish their own exact tested wording. Dri-Eaz currently states 99.99% of 0.1–0.5 micron particulates for the HEPA 700, while XPOWER publishes 99.97% at 0.3 microns for the X-2480A.
Those statements should not be collapsed into a homemade “better HEPA” ranking. They identify the manufacturer’s published filtration evidence under its stated conditions. If the filtration detail is your main decision, use HEPA Air Scrubber.
Static pressure and ducting matter after the HEPA box is checked
Once both HEPA and negative-air capability are verified, the more useful comparison is how the machine supports the installed setup. Dri-Eaz publishes 3.0 inches H₂O static pressure for the HEPA 700 family and documents 14-inch containment ducting. AlorAir publishes 2.8 inches H₂O plus exact inlet/outlet duct sizes for the HEPA Max 870 and 970.
Static pressure is not a universal field-performance guarantee, but it provides more context than free-air CFM alone when filters and ducting add resistance. Duct diameter also matters because a fleet’s existing hose/duct inventory may fit one machine family more naturally than another.
High airflow and portability create very different equipment paths
The HEPA 2000 reaches a published 2,000 CFM but weighs 124 lb and draws 7.7A. The XPOWER X-2480A is 23.6 lb at 550 CFM and 2.8A. Both can satisfy the combined “HEPA + negative air” requirement, yet they are not substitutes for the same deployment problem.

Carbon is an optional third decision layer
If odor or smoke support is part of the project, carbon can become another requirement after HEPA and negative-air capability. Dri-Eaz HEPA 700 supports optional carbon.
Carbon still addresses a different filtration problem from HEPA and should not be described as a mold-remediation or source-removal solution. If carbon is required, use the Finder’s carbon requirement rather than assuming every HEPA negative-air machine includes it.
Electrical load can determine whether “fewer bigger units” is actually easier
One 2,000 CFM machine at 7.7A can be operationally simpler in some spaces and more awkward in others. Several 500–700 CFM machines can spread airflow and provide redundancy but also increase cords, filter inventory and deployment time. Manufacturer daisy-chain limits add another exact-model constraint.

Variable airflow can be useful in tighter containment
Variable-speed machines can cover a wider range of nominal airflow requirements without changing equipment. Dri-Eaz publishes 275–700 CFM for the HEPA 700 family, while AlorAir publishes 270–550 CFM for the HEPA Max 870 and 270–750 CFM for the HEPA Max 970.
Variable speed does not eliminate the need to verify the actual pressure condition. It simply gives the operator more adjustment range within the machine’s published operating envelope.

A machine with HEPA filtration and negative-air capability supplies filtered airflow. It does not decide containment geometry, makeup-air openings, pressure target, exhaust location or verification method. How to narrow the nine-model shortlist
- Calculate nominal CFM. Use volume and your project’s target ACH.
- Set a per-unit power or weight limit if one is real. A large-airflow machine may become impractical on stairs or on a loaded circuit.
- Decide whether carbon is needed. Do not let an optional feature become a hidden requirement.
- Compare duct connections and static pressure. These fields matter when the machine will be used under restriction.
- Check exact current sources. A familiar model family is not enough if the current exact configuration has changed.
