What a useful air-scrubber comparison should normalize

Headline CFM is only one row. Two 550 CFM machines can differ in filter stages, carbon support, static pressure, duct connections, electrical outlets, weight and monitoring. A 700 CFM machine may publish variable airflow and higher static pressure; a 600 CFM machine may include activated carbon; a smaller 400 CFM unit may simplify transport and multi-unit deployment.

Compare keeps those fields separate so a family name, brand or affiliate link cannot flatten the decision into one number.

Airflow range and rated airflow are not interchangeable

Some current models publish a single rated airflow. Others publish a variable range. The comparison table therefore shows the published airflow shape rather than forcing every product into the same “rated CFM” field. Dri-Eaz HEPA 700 is currently published as variable to 700 CFM, while XPOWER X-2480A is published at 550 CFM rated airflow.

HEPA wording needs its particle-size context

Where an exact product publishes both an efficiency percentage and a particle size, Compare keeps them together. A 99.99% claim over 0.1–0.5 microns is not silently treated as the same test statement as 99.97% at 0.3 microns. If the current record only confirms that a HEPA stage is included, the table says that rather than inventing a percentage.

Negative-air and duct rows show equipment capability, not containment adequacy

Compare can show whether the manufacturer explicitly publishes negative-air capability, inlet/outlet duct sizes and static pressure. Those rows help identify compatible equipment, but they do not prove that a particular containment will achieve a target pressure differential.

Use Negative Air Machine for the setup-oriented interpretation and HEPA Negative Air Machine when both verified HEPA filtration and published negative-air capability are mandatory shortlist criteria.

Electrical rows should be read together

Amp draw, GFCI outlet, daisy-chain outlet and maximum published chain count are separate fields. A daisy-chain outlet is useful, but it does not mean the same number of units can be connected across brands or models. Dri-Eaz currently publishes different chain limits for HEPA 700, DefendAir HEPA 700 and DefendAir 400.

The comparison keeps the exact model limit visible instead of deriving a generic sitewide rule.

Physical differences can change fleet economics

Weight and dimensions matter when several units are loaded into vehicles, carried upstairs or stacked in storage. A 23.6 lb XPOWER X-2480A and a 124 lb Dri-Eaz HEPA 2000 solve very different logistics problems even though both belong to the same broad air-scrubber category.

Compare shows those physical rows alongside airflow so the user can see the tradeoff rather than sorting by one metric.

Why held/conflicted products stay visible here

The BlueDri AirShield 550 currently has a manufacturer-source airflow conflict in the normalized catalog. That makes the product unsuitable for deterministic Finder scoring until the disputed field is resolved, but it does not make the rest of the record disappear. Compare can show the product, its known fields and the stored conflict so the user understands what is and is not established.

This is one of the reasons Compare and Finder have different eligibility rules.

Observed price is dated context

A few exact Amazon-mapped products retain an observed price and check date from the commerce audit. Those values can be useful for orientation, but they are volatile and are not used to declare a winner. If a current price matters, follow the shopping route and verify the live merchant offer.

Use Differences only after you understand the baseline

The Differences only control hides rows where every selected record currently has the same normalized value. It is useful for narrowing a long table, but it is not a “better/worse” filter. The fact that two models differ on weight, carbon, monitoring or static pressure only matters when that difference relates to your actual job.

Start with the full table once, then use Differences only to isolate the rows that need a closer decision.

Confirm exact model identity before interpreting a difference

Model-family names can persist while hardware, controls, connectivity, filter packages or marketplace configurations change. Compare therefore works from normalized exact records rather than from a retailer title alone. The broader Restoration Select catalog already contains examples where an older marketplace identity shares a familiar model family with a current manufacturer configuration that has changed decision-relevant hardware.

For air scrubbers, the same rule prevents a color, bundle or older configuration from quietly becoming the evidence source for the current exact record. If a row looks surprising, use the manufacturer-source link in the selected-model card before treating the difference as purchase-critical.

Matching rows do not make two machines interchangeable

Two selected models can show the same CFM, amp draw or HEPA status and still serve different workflows. A compact 550-CFM unit with low transport weight may be easier to distribute across rooms, while another 550-CFM unit may include carbon or publish stronger ducting evidence. “Differences only” is therefore a scanning aid, not a feature that decides which equal rows are unimportant.

Start with the requirement that brought the models into the comparison, then read the matching and differing rows around that requirement. Why can a model appear in Compare when it is held from Finder?

Compare is an evidence view. A product with a decision-relevant source conflict can still be useful to inspect side by side, while deterministic Finder scoring may hold it until the conflict is resolved.

Does Differences only show which model is better?

No. It only hides rows where every selected product currently has the same normalized value. A difference becomes important only when it matters to your application or constraints.

Are observed prices used to declare a winner?

No. Retained prices are dated purchase context only. They do not change technical rows or create a winner.

Can I share a comparison?

Yes. Selected model IDs are stored in the page URL as a models query parameter, so the same exact records can be reopened as long as those current product IDs remain in the catalog.
